Generals finish football season with win over rival Jackson

Tonight was Senior Night in the Backyard as the Robert E. Lee Generals closed out their season against the rival Andrew Jackson Tigers with hopes of a win.

The Generals mixed it up on offense with 3 different quarterbacks taking a snap and a committee of running backs. The standout performance of the game came from Senior Devin Mitchell. Mitchell accounted for 112 yards receiving and four of the five touchdowns. Mitchell also accounted for a fourth-quarter interception that helped lock up the victory for the seniors. The 32-18 win marked the first win in the newly renovated Backyard.

The Generals finish the season with a 3-7 record and hopes of improvement with a solid group of players returning next season. Great job Generals.

Linebacker Kalen Williams returned the game's opening kick off for the Generals' only score of the night. The point after attempt was no good. The Generals (2-5) will host rival Ed White (5-1) next week in The Backyard.

Somber Homecoming for Generals

The Lee Generals (2-4) played host to the Englewood Rams (2-4) in their first Homecoming game after two years of construction. The Generals started off slow, spotting the Rams two points early in the second quarter when a bad snap sailed over the head of punter Jordan Bell through the end zone.

Later in the second quarter the Rams were able to break a big run down the sideline to put the Rams up 9-0. That would not come without answer though as the Generals were able to run the ball down the field and finally punch it in with a quarterback keeper up the gut for an Isaiah Dunning touchdown. The Generals then trailed the Rams 9-7 heading into halftime.

After the half the Generals looked strong as they were able to move the ball down the field. The Rams though held firm at the goal line and a fumble on 4th down caused a turnovers on downs after the Generals recovered at the 1 yard line. The Rams were able to break it big though with a screen, running the ball down their visiting sideline for a huge gain. This set up a quarterback keeper of their own, as the Englewood quarterback ran it in for the final touchdown of the game. The Rams were able to convert the point after attempt. With that the Rams upset the Generals in the Backyard 16-7.

The Generals (2-4) will next travel to take on the Orange Park Raiders (2-3). Both teams will be looking for their first district win.

Lee v. Englewood voted Game of the Week!

The Homecoming football game between Lee v. Englewood was voted Channel 4 Game of the Week. The game drew 51% of the 31,000-plus votes cast, beating out Harvest Church at Christ's Church, Baker County at Wolfson, and Palatka at Menendez.

Parker tops Lee 14-13 with trick play

The Lee Generals (2-2) took on the Terry Parker Braves (1-3) in district play at Joe Hodge Stadium with both teams looking for their first district win. The game had an added twist when during warm-ups it was noticed that the game would be played with no working scoreboard, leaving both teams to manage the clock without a visible game clock.

The first quarter was a defensive stalemate with Parker and Lee trading turnovers and both offenses struggling to move the ball. Lee was finally able to put points on the board in the 2nd quarter when they marched the ball down the field and punch it in with a Tony Belle run out of the wildcat. Jordan Bell was successful on the point after attempt making it 7-0 Generals. Neither team was able to put anymore points on the board before half.

After halftime the Generals again were able to move the ball down the field scoring on a pass from Sophomore Quarterback Isaiah Dunning to his favorite target Devin Mitchell, however the point after attempt sailed left leaving the score 13-0 Generals.

Parker wasn't out of the game yet though as the Braves were able to move the ball down the field closing the game to 13-8. Again the offenses failed to move the ball, with Parker limiting themselves with several offensive penalties.

With only a few minutes remaining in the game the Braves turned to trickery as they pulled a double pass out of their playbook scoring a touchdown to take the lead 14-13. With under two minutes to play in the game Parker attempted an onside kick to prevent weapons Devin Mitchell and Tony Belle from returning the ball, which was recovered by Generals lineman Curtis Rainey. The Generals again started moving the ball down the field with quick timing routes through the air. However, the Generals came up short when Quarterback Isaiah Dunning was picked off. Parker was then able to down the ball and run out the clock.

Generals lose heartbreaker at home

District play opened tonight for the Lee Generals (2-2) as they took on the Middleburg Broncos (1-3) in the Backyard. The Generals started slow allowing the Broncos to jump out to an 8-0 lead, but the defense was able to put points on the board with defensive back Quran Hafis returning a fumble for a touchdown. The ensuing point after attempt clanked off the upright making it an 8-6 game. Later in the second quarter the Broncos were able to score again, heading to half with a 15-6 lead.

After half the Broncos continued their scoring momentum extending their lead to 21-6. Generals Quarterback Isaiah Dunning however found some rhythm with Receiver Devin Mitchell connecting for a touchdown with the Generals converting the 2-point attempt. With the Generals offense starting to click the Broncos answered with a touchdown of their own, maintaining their lead at 28-14 just before the end of the 3rd quarter.

The Dunning-Mitchell connection wasn't over though as Mitchell was able to break double coverage on a long pass in the back corner of the endzone for a Generals touchdown. Jordan Bell, filling in for injured kicker Darren Hayes, was able to convert the point after attempt closing the gap to 28-21.

With the game intensity picking up the Generals defense held strong and looked to have momentum when defensive back Chris Mobley recovered a fumble with just over 6 minutes left in the game. The Generals however threw an interception quickly ending the following drive. The defense again held strong forcing the Broncos to punt the ball away, giving hope back to the Generals. Unfortunately a holding call in the end zone on the ensuing drive resulted in a safety for the final score of the game making it 30-21.

The Generals will next travel to Terry Parker (1-3) to take on the Braves in district play on Friday, September 27, 2013 at 7:00pm.

Generals beat Rebels 21-20 in OT

The Lee Generals (2-1) were able to add one to the win column on the road last night with an overtime victory over the Forrest Rebels (0-3). The Rebels scored first in overtime, but failed to convert the point after attempt. Lee Quarterback Isaiah Dunning was able hook up with Tony Belle on an 8-yard pass to tie it up. The Generals were able to hit their point after attempt winning 21-20.

The Generals will be looking for their first home win next Friday, September 20, when they take on the Middleburg Mustangs (0-3) in the Backyard at 7:00pm.

Generals Open the Backyard

The Lee Generals (1-1) opened the new Backyard tonight against the Ponte Vedra Sharks (2-0). Many compliments were made on the new facilities, but the compliments didn't stop there. The Generals, though oversized by the Sharks players, played with a lot of heart and determination.

With the Sharks jumping out to a 21-0 lead the Generals didn't quit. Senior Zaraphon Only answered the Sharks by scoring the Generals first touchdown on the newly renovated field making it 21-7. The defense was able to come up with a pick on the following drive, but a fumble gave Ponte Vedra the ball back just before half.

Generals defeat Indians after delay

The Robert E. Lee Generals defeated the Baldwin Indians 23-15 Saturday in a rain delayed game. The game was delayed Friday night at halftime with the Indians leading 8-7. Running Back Jacori Lowry led the Generals with a pair of touchdowns with Quarterback Isaiah Dunning added another on the ground. Leading the Generals defense was Mike Mercer and Kalen Williams. Mercer had a pair of sacks and Williams had an interception for the Generals, dropping the Indians to 0-1 for the season.

The Generals (1-0) will take on the Ponte Vedra Sharks (1-0) next on Friday, September 6 at 7pm in The Backyard. The Sharks won their season opener against Nease (0-1) 52-17.
